About Us

Macie Publishing Company was founded in 1974 by Ed and Macie Sueta.  Ed was a composer, author, clinician and professional musician.  Macie was an elementary educator.

Ed began playing professionally at a very young age where he toured the Great Lakes on the weekends with the big bands.  After graduating from High Point University, where he met a lovely elementary education major, Macie, the couple married and moved to New York City where Ed was stationed in the Navy.  During this time, he performed all over Europe with the Navy Band and even got to perform for Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation.  After receiving his Master’s Degree at Columbia, the couple moved to the suburbs to raise their growing family.

Ed began teaching both in the classroom and privately.  He continued to perform professionally as well-performing for many well-known entertainers including Tommy Dorsey, Mel Tormé, Henry Mancini, Frankie Avalon, The Doors and the Temptations-to name a few.  In addition, he played with the NJ Symphony and in the pit of both Broadway and off-Broadway shows.

Ed realized early on in his teaching career that one of the keys to producing great musicians was to ensure that students develop their rhythm reading skills. Not finding materials which were supportive of that goal, Ed began writing his own music textbooks. After 15 years of painstaking work, the first band book came out in 1974 – THE ED SUETA BAND METHOD- a national favorite which was adopted by the Department of Defense Schools in Europe and Asia and is still used extensively today, over 40 years later. The first recorder book was published in 1989.

A FAMILY TRADITION

In 1986, Ed’s son, Ed Jr. and youngest daughter, Julie joined Macie Publishing.  Ed brought a legal background and Julie brought a design degree with business background. They continue to work as a family 30 years later and consider all employees to be family members as well.

For the last 46 years, Macie has provided professional development for music educators all over the United States, Europe and Canada.  Ed and Julie worked with Ed for a number of years to create the online version of Be A Recorder Star. Ensuring the success of music teachers and their students has been both a personal and company goal for Ed and his family.

It was Ed’s passion and now his childrens’  legacy to bring the joy of music to as many students as possible.  Providing great recorder materials for children is not just a business for this company, it is a large source of family pride, hard work and dedication.
