Macie Publishing Company was founded in 1974 by Ed and Macie Sueta. Ed is a composer, author, clinician and professional musician. Macie is a retired educator who taught elementary school and specialized in remedial reading.
Ed began playing professionally at a very young age when he toured the Great Lakes on the weekends with the big bands. After graduating from High Point University, where he met a lovely elementary education major, the couple married and moved to New York City where Ed was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. During this time, he performed all over Europe with the Navy Band and also performed for Queen Elizabeth. After receiving his Master's Degree at Columbia, the couple moved to the suburbs to raise their growing family.
Ed began teaching both in the classroom and privately. He continued to play the clarinet, flute and saxophone professionally performing for many well known entertainers including Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Henry Mancini, Frankie Avalon, The Doors and the Temptations-to name a few. In addition, he played with the NJ Symphony and in the pit orchestras of Broadway shows.
Ed realized early in his teaching career that one of the keys to producing great musicians is the development of superior music reading skills. Not finding materials which were sufficiently supportive of that goal, he was convinced there had to be a better way to teach his students. Ed started his lifework of creating curriculum materials which nurture the development of young musicians.
After nearly 15 years of painstaking work, in 1974 he published The Ed Sueta Band Method- a national favorite which was later adopted by the State of Texas and the Department of Defense Schools in Europe and Asia. The Ed Sueta Band Method is still used extensively today, over 40 years later- a testament to its effectiveness.
In 1989, Ed published his first recorder method book. He recognized that reaching young students when they began playing what was often their first instrument could lay the foundation for their success and future musical development and involvement. He has since developed the Be A Recorder Star Curriculum, co-authored Keys to Successful Piano Performance with Dr. William Workinger and authored Premier Performance for Band as well as authoring or editing various ancillary publications.
In 1986, Ed's son, Ed Jr. and youngest daughter, Julie joined Macie Publishing. Ed, a graduate of Boston College and Duke University Law School, had practiced law in Texas. Julie, a graduate of the University of Texas, studied business and obtained a design degree from the Art Institute of Dallas. They worked in all phases of the business from picking and packing orders to establishing distribution operations to exhibiting at conferences throughout the country to later working on the development and editing of the company’s various curriculums. They have most recently been engaged in the development of the digital version of the Be A Recorder Star Student Method Book. The Suetas continue to work as a family 30 years later and consider all their coworkers to be family members as well.
In 1995, the company split into two separate sister corporations- Macie Publishing Company (for recorder and general music) and Ed Sueta Music Publications, Inc. (for band publications). The separation enabled the companies to better serve their constituencies although teachers who teach both band and recorder often use the curriculums of each company. Both companies share the same philosophy and dedication to music educators.
For the last 42 years, Macie Publishing Company has been dedicated to partnering with music educators for the benefit of young students. Macie has provided professional development throughout the United States, Europe and Canada. Through attendance at hundreds of state and national music conferences, workshops, professional development sessions and webinars presented by Ed, Sr. and our clinicians, Macie continues to provide music educators with innovative teaching methods and outstanding curriculum materials. Helping music teachers achieve success with their students has been Ed's personal mission.
Music shapes and influences young lives in a way that no other subject matter can. We are proud and honored to play a role in helping music educators instill a love of music in their young students and bringing the joy and many benefits music brings to us throughout our lives. It has been Ed's passion and now his childrens' to bring the joy of music to as many students as possible. Providing great materials for children is not just a business for this company, it is a large source of family pride.
